Sticking this post here because it’s “helpful”.

I figured out the secret handshake on Garmin Connect to streamline updates to XMB if you don’t want to wait for an automatic update (which is random IME) or connect the device to Garmin Express.

  1. Power on your Edge device and pick a profile that doesn’t have XMB installed. I use the default Road profile on my 830 as that has no changes to it. I have a separate Road 2 profile with my preferred mods along with an Indoor profile with XMB.*
  2. Run Garmin Connect on phone, tap your device, wait for initial sync to complete, then navigate to the XMB data field.
  3. Select Update button and wait until it’s done. “Download complete” will appear on your device and the Update available notice on GC will disappear.
  4. You are set to ride. Select the profile you want to use and go.
  5. If you want to confirm the data field has been updated, start a recording and the version is displayed. Or tap the screen (if touchscreen model) and the version is shown at bottom of Summary page.

*If all of your profiles have XMB installed the other option is power the device off/on after Step 3.
The issue is the field cannot be updated if already in use.

BTW current release as of 21 Feb is v2.3.
