Problems with Magic Buckets

I have installed, removed, reinstalled Magic Buckets about 6 times so far to try to resolve these issues, and posted to the facebook group but so far no joy.

I’m using an Edge 1030 plus. I was able to get MB paired with my xert account, and it showed up on my Garmin as expected. After a few minutes the dot on the left side goes green and it seems to have acquired my profile. Then after a few minutes the data field reverts to a small Xert logo. After a few minutes the Garmin reboots itself and then when it starts again it reboots immediately if I navigate back to the MB page (which is still displayed as just the circular logo). If I long-press on the page with the circular logo before it reboots I can then re-load the app from the IQ apps list and the app then loads properly again - but after a few minutes it crashes again. Another problem is that when I install Magic Buckets an additional page of data fields appears by itself along with the MB page. The new page has Timer, Grade, Power, Speed and Cadence. Long-press on the fields doesn’t do anything and I can’t change, disable or delete the page in Activity Profiles because the page doesn’t appear at all. I don’t want that page in my rotation but can’t get rid of it unless I delete MB.

Hey Stephen,

I’ll send you a PM. If the data field is crashing, we should be able to retrieve a LOG file from your device to help us narrow down on your specific issue.

Cheers,
Scott

I got the Garmin Edge 1030 yesterday. and all of the issues you mention in this post, I also encountered (device frooze and had to reset) (installed uninstalled several times to finally make the MB to work without error message), plus a few additional oddities I cannot figure out. I am a bit puzzled at the moment, not sure really the sequence of doing things to make it work as intended. Since this is my first experience with Garmin, that too also mess with my mind.

I installed Garmin Connect and GarminIQ on my phone and also created Garmin account.
I installed XertMB on the Garmin
I created a datapage for XertMB on the Garmin device on the Indoor profile
I linked Garmin with Xert
I added a workout in Xert planner with a late starting time
I added the Xert workout in Garmin calender as a workout
When starting Garmin Edge in my paincave, it discovered the trainer so I added it.
I open Garmin Connect on my mobile
I started Zwift on my PC and started to ride
I started recording on the Garmin
XertMB page shows the watts/cadence but initially I got this result

Started new recording many times but constantly said “waiting for targets”
I see power and cadence numbers matching Zwift, so something is working I think.
Also, this Page does not at all look like the pictures I seen in the Xert YT videos and it doesn’t like like the picture I got from my friend who also just started to test XertMB on his Garmin, For him it looks like I expected.

After an hour of multiple trial/error/restarting/ I got this picture

Now the waiting for taget message is gone, but except for power and cadence nothing else happens. Time left remains the same and the Low TSS just stays at 0. I was cycling for at least 20 minutes to see if the LowTSS would change to something else than 0 but for it stayed 0, until I decided to give up and try again another day.

Anyone have any idea where I got lost?

Are you using a power meter, or using power from your smart trainer?

If the latter, try also adding your smart trainer as a power sensor. Then the data field should update the power & buckets as you ride.

I am using the power from my wahoo kickr core. I will try it. Thank you

Check the Training page at xertonline.com before you start a session as that is where XMB fetches from.
In your case 124 Low XSS was indicated which when fetched triggered the Endurance screen on XMB.
If initial fetch fails a 300 sec countdown timer starts below the dot in upper left. That is a limitation of Connect IQ.
If the fetch includes any High/Peak XSS the Intervals screen will appear instead.

I think I just experienced that :grinning:
Added sensor power
Started a new recording on garmin with same result as yesterday. Was sitting and mumbling to myself and all of a sudden, this page showed up

Now that XMB is working for you, here are several pointers to keep in mind.
First off is where the XSS target comes from for the day.
If you haven’t selected a workout and none has been assigned to the Planner, XMB will pick up the XSS goal for the day from the top-level advice.
With XATA that’s this text on the Training page –

ATAforXMB

Note that is will differ a bit from the workouts on the recommended list which includes entries from the Library that most closely match today’s goal. For example, here the top three entries for the advice above.

If I were to select one of those workouts that would become the XSS goal fetched by XMB.
If no selection were made the top-level goal would apply.
Same goes with XFAI where the top-level advice might be this –

XFAIexampleHIT2

If a recommended workout is assigned to the Planner XMB will fetch that workout’s XSS ratio instead.
This means you could literally never select a workout and ride XMB every day to achieve the day’s goal. It’s highly unlikely you’ll want to do that, but it is possible.

With that in mind there are couple ways you might use XMB indoors.
One is to ride your EBC workout as normal in AUTO mode on your phone but watch what happens on XMB as you complete the workout. If you reach cooldown and notice you’re short on any high/peak pts you can switch to Slope mode on EBC, follow XMB to insert some intervals of your own to fill the remaining buckets, then add a cooldown.
Or you might start a workout on EBC, get part way into it and decide you’d rather free ride with XMB to hit today’s target. For that switch to Slope mode and ignore EBC.
Or simply free ride in Slope mode on Zwift following XMB guidance to fill the buckets. That will simulate how you would use XMB outdoors.

Tried today. Worked perfectly.
Started XMB during my Zwift session, did the workout “One step closer”, then rode with Pacebot Constance in Zwift to fill my buckets more. :+1:
Is it necessary for Garmin Connect to run on the phone when running XMB on the Garmin Edge?
A friend said it should run but I’m thinking that is strange because if I am riding outdoors, then I would need to bring both the Garmin and my phone.
Thank you

Hi, this is the picture from my endurance ride today, using XMB. I couldn’t stop myself from testing some high/peak.

What does the numbers in the boxes zone and fat represent?

Also, in the picture it looks ok but during the ride it was hard to read. It would be easier to see the numbers if “low” and “67%” was also in white color

Worked perfect today and without XMB, I would have ended the day +25 XSS short :ok_hand:

On an endurance ride the ideal “zone” is 75-100% LTP. (Traditional Z2)
You spent 20% of total time in that zone which is represented by the blue section of the bar above ZONE. The white portion of the bar indicates the 80% of total time you spent below 75% LTP or above 100% LTP.
The endurance goal is to spend as much time as you can boosting the blue bar as you fill the Low bucket while avoiding High and Peak strain due to surges and/or climbs that push you above TP.
67% of Low XSS was in fat-burning territory.

Thank you.
What does 27.8 and 80,5 represent?
Is it amount of XSS?

Yes. 27.8 XSS was performed in the endurance zone (75-100% LTP) and 80.5 XSS was performed while in the fat burning zone.

For an endurance activity the goal is to stay between 75% and 100% of LTP.

Garmin Connect is only required for the initial XMB fetch to occur. However, Garmin Connect provides other functions such as phone notifications (calls, text, weather alerts) plus LiveTrack if you intend to use that feature when riding outdoors.

Hi Scott,
I also have this problem with the small circular Xert logo on my Garmin Edge 830. I only have this problem for magic intervals, not for magic endurance. Is that possible? I don’t know what PM is exactly but can you also send this to me to solve this problem?

  1. Make sure version 2.7 is installed. If you are not sure follow these instructions.
  2. If you have any other 3rd data fields installed (ex, CORE or Alpha-HRV) go into XMB settings on Garmin Connect and disable FIT Graphs.
  3. If 1 or 2 does not resolve the issue you can create a LOG file for diagnosis.
