Given that it takes 6 seconds to hit the desired wattage ERG mode seems to be a bad situation for high wattage intervals under a minute. Do you turn off ERG mode for those workouts? Since this is well known should XERT avoid building plans with short intervals (or add 6 seconds to them)?
My plan today has a s series of 10 second intervals hence the question.
Doesn’t that depend of the trainer you use? I believe TrainerRoad includes some special features to invert the ERG response of each trainer type by sending the changes a bit earlier and perhaps using ERG targets which are different from what is in the workout file.
To me Zwift shows power climbing incrementally to the target value, takes 6 seconds to reach it once the interval starts. I’m using a KICKR SmartBike Version 1.
Thanks - right now it’s consistently taking 6 seconds to reach target power once the interval starts. I am using a KICKR Bike Version 1 on a Windows PC
FWIW, depending on the intervals being recommended, I disable ERG mode in Zwift and use my gears & cadence to hit the interval targets… I find this more engaging & actually sorta easier then ERG mode, especially if the intervals are > 450 W or so where it’s possible to get bogged down in the ‘ERG spiral of death’.
Here’s an example of a ‘Mixed Pursuiter’ autogenerated workout that I did in Zwift just a bit ago. After the ERG mode warmup, I turned off ERG mode and did the main part of the workout with my gears & cadence:
I was beginning to think that was the only way to get short intervals done at the suggested watts. Today’s session has 30 seconds on/off for the main intervals.
Disabling ERG in Zwift shifts it into a SIM/SLOPE mode. You can modify the resistance up/down a bit using the companion app.
Assuming that you’re pretty much hitting the same power each time (like in my example above), you’ll quickly figure out which gear you need to be in for each interval and just re-use that gear each time for the subsequent intervals… just like doing your intervals on the road outdoors
I guess it then uses slope mode and the resistance will not change based on the terrain in Zwift? Would be nice if Zwift added mixed mode support to the .zwo file format.
Correct - it doesn’t change based on virtual terrain.
Hmm… probably not an easy task (or a priority) for them at the moment. Zwift currently offers either a power target for the interval or free ride in sim/slope mode. Xert’s Mixed Mode workouts have both a power target and a pre-set slope value.
