Workout player for Garmin questions

Recent convert to Garmin. I’ve just picked up a Garmin edge 840

Decided to give the workout player a try today, doing the workout iron man - 90. Im keen to do this rather than using the EBC app as I’m invested in the Garmin ecosystem (also have a Fenix 7) and don’t want to have to dual record.

Despite the workout running successfully I’ve ran into a few post workout quirks and I’m hoping someone can help me out.

I have a kicker core and Assioma duo pedals. The kicker core is setup to use power from pedals using the option within the wahoo app.

For this reason I have both setup as sensors within the edge settings rather than setting up the workout player to use power match (ie. Only the pedals set up as sensor on my edge and trainer selected from within the workout player)

Workout ran fine and I was able to complete it successfully.

The quirks:

  • It didn’t detect speed
  • Despite GPS being set to off in the workout player settings, the completed activity in xert shows that it was tracking my GPS position. Do I need turn off GPS in the edge settings before opening the workout player? Would this have affected the speed detection?
-The ride uploaded to Strava directly from my Garmin but not from xert. Not the end of the world but I do like the xert graphics and info to show in Strava. I have Strava sync setup in xert setup and the option to sync new xert activities to Strava selected.
-The activity in Strava shows as 1:08:00 in Strava rather than the 1:30:00 shown in both Xert and Garmin connect. If I download the fit file from xert and upload to Strava the same thing happens.

If anyone can shed some light on the above that would be great. I welcome any suggestions re changes to my setup.

Thanks
Ben

If you select an Indoor profile before runnning the Connect IQ Player GPS on the Garmin is disabled by default.
I just tested a short ride with trainer connection only and got speed and distance estimated for the activity.
As long as Garmin sends to Xert only and Xert sends to Strava you should see the Xert report on Strava. You’ll want to disable Garmin to Strava in Garmin Connect.
Perhaps the timing issue is releated to GPS and moving time being calculated on Strava.

Thanks for the reply

I figured out the Strava duration issue which was tied to the location data. Once I stripped the location field from the fit file it was accurate

I tried a few things to get the speed and distance but no luck.

-disabled GPS from the Garmin settings
-I unpaired my pedals from my trainer in the wahoo app
-Removed all sensors from my Garmin
-Paired only the trainer
-with and without erg mode speed simulation enabled in the wahoo app

It still didn’t report any speed or distance.

While in the Wahoo app go ahead and disable Power Smoothing if not currrently disabled.

What’s New in the Xert Workout Player for Garmin Version 2.0 – Xert
If still not working to estimate speed and distance try testing with only power from the trainer paired (no trainer control). That means you’l be in Slope mode and use gears/cadence to control watts.

The GPS location/speed issue is something Garmin CIQ team is aware of and are investigating. I haven’t heard an update from them recently. Works on older units (Edge X30/X20 series) so seems to be something specific to their newer devices (Edge X40 & 1050).

You can use the Xert EBC app for indoor training & you’ll get speed/distance estimated from your power data.

Thanks Scott.

Hopefully they can resolve sooner rather than later.

In the meantime I decided to try magic buckets and im loving it.

Good to have options. Thanks for the help
