I can guess (and have been guessing) how these 2 settings are used but could someone post a clear explanation? I assume Weekly Availability must always be <= (less than or equal to) Max Weekly Hours?
To simplify things I have made sure to keep these 2 the same! I’d like (expect) them to work something like this: Weekly Availability is what I want Xert to assume and abide by when suggesting / planning workouts. Max Weekly Hours is what I may be able to pull off on occasion, like if I’m falling behind or whatever. I do not want (or expect) Xert to dip into those “reserve” hours very often.
Hi Brian - great question! You’ve mostly got it right:
- Max Weekly Hours is the ceiling — XFAI won’t plan more total training time than this across the week.
- Weekly Availability lets you define how much time you have on specific days (e.g. 0 hours Monday, 2 hours Tuesday, 3 hours Saturday, etc.).
If your daily availability adds up to less than your Max Weekly Hours, then Xert will be limited by the day-to-day time slots. If the sum is equal to or above, then Max Weekly Hours becomes the main limiter.
By default, Xert fills in Weekly Availability based on your usual ride times, but you can adjust it as needed. Personally, I like to set Max Weekly Hours a bit higher than what I usually manage - it gives me a sense of how much time I might need to hit more ambitious goals.
Hope that helps clarify!

So how do I change that “default” behavior? I currently have my Weekly Availability set to the time slots I would like XFAI to use, regardless of what I’ve been doing.
Today I set my Max Weekly Hours to 18. I previously had it set to 14 to match my Weekly Availability total, which is still set to 14 now. I haven’t clicked the big scary Adapt Forecast button yet to see the result (I have some ride data from last week to clean up first). However, given your explanation, I don’t understand why you would set Max Weekly Hours higher because it sounds like XFAI will be limited by the Weekly Availability anyway. Where / how do you get / see “a sense of how much time I might need to hit more ambitious goals.”? Do you just click Adapt Forecast after changing you goal (and how would you also change your goal)? Wouldn’t it be just as easy to change your Weekly Availability only and eliminate Max Weekly Hours? I still don’t understand the point of having both if Max is > or = to Weekly.
I also changed my Activity Time Method from Moving Time to Pedaling Time. That’s another topic, but related and will likely have me tweaking Weekly Availability and/or Max Weekly Hours again soon enough. Is Pedaling Time based on Cadence (> 0 rpm), Power (> 0 watts), or both (if available)?
