Training Hours - Please Help

Hello,

I recently started cycling again after a period of running in 2024. As a result, my cycling activities in Xert begin on January 8, 2025. I am progressing in Xert according to its fitness signature metrics, but the Adaptive Training Advisor is throwing me off.

I am having Xert build me a new training program for continuous improvement. Even with a moderate improvement rate selected, the Adaptive Training Advisor is suggesting that I train an exorbitant amount of hours per week (40 hours - see attached photos) and is showing a massive XSS training deficit. Ramping up to 40 hours per week is impossible and would wreck me even if I had the time to attempt it.

Do you know why I am being recommended to train so much? Is there a fix? I’ve tried addressing this for hours, but have failed thus-far.

Thank you in advance! I appreciate your help.

Do you have running activities with power data mixed into your cycling profile?
Your TL table shows a current value of 306. That equates to massive hours/week.

0 Stars – Untrained: Training Load < 25
1 Star – Recreational: 50 > Training Load >= 25
2 Stars – Trained: 75 > Training Load >= 50
3 Stars – Competitive: 110 > Training Load > 75
4 Stars – Elite: 150 > Training Load >= 110
5 Stars – Pro Level: Training Load >= 150

It does look like your data might have a few errors in it, perhaps from mixing running activity fitness signatures with cycliing fitness signatures.

Your training load should be quite low if you’ve only started cycling again in January.

If you continue to struggle, reach out to Xert support and we can have a closer look. support@xertonline.com.

Cheers.

Thanks for the prompt response. You are correct - I did have running activities with power data in my profile initially. I’ve since gone back and deleted these, but my initial training load in January is still showing as very high. Is there a way to reset this? I did also email support.

Here’s my training load graph:

Go back further. Your TL line starts at 350 on the left axis. (Use “Forever” on the right side drop-down.)

Hi Armando, first of all, I just wanted to say that I listened to you on Fast Talk. Thank you so much for that podcast - great listen.

The TL was starting at 350 on January 8 by default. This is the date of my first cyckubg activity, and I deleted all prior activities. The TL was still set at 350 even after the deletion of these activities (?). I tried setting it to “Forever”, and the window still has not shifted earlier than January 8.

I did find a potential fix. Under XPMC settings, I can manually set the training load by date. Using this, I was able to set the training load to 75 on January 8.

Is this the approach you would recommend? If so, what would you suggest I set the January 8 training load to? For awareness, up until January 8, I was running ~80 miles per week until I got hurt, and have since shifted to cycling after approximately a year’s hiatus.

Here is the updated progression chart screenshot:

Thanks!

That looks a lot better. Still a Ramp Rate of 8.2 since January is pretty aggressive. (you went from 74 to 137).

One thing you can do is perform a Progression Recalculation (essentially a reset and recalculate operation) under Profile Settings / Fitness Signature, top right corner. Be sure to set a good starting signature. You can let it estimate your starting TL and see if that works.

Thanks. I just did the reset/recalculation, and my starting training load was estimated to be 179.5… seems high. I believe that I should manually set this using the method I previously-outlined. Do you think a starting TL of 100 is reasonable? Also, is this going to impact the workouts that the system recommends? I believe it will, which is why getting this right is so important.

It will affect the predictions more so than the workouts.

Got it. I think I got it figured out now. Threshold power seems to check-out.
