Strava's Latest API Policy Changes

There has been some recent turmoil stirred up regarding Strava’s new API policies for third-party developers like Xert. The new policies at face value appear to constrain developers very broadly. However, based on Strava’s latest clarification, it’s been made much clearer:

We did not receive any notifications from Strava of any misuse of their data so Xert was unaffected by these new policies.

Regarding the use of AI/Machine Learning, as of today, our algorithms and methods have centered around mathematical modeling and not training a neural network (ML technique) for example. We do have plans to implement possible ML techniques when we’ve exhausted what our current methods can provide. If we do so, we will aim to act responsibly on all our data, not just that from Strava. Should we need to use data from Strava, we will work closely with them, as we have in the past with our use of Strava segments for example. We’ll provide them with transparency and obtain permission in how we intend to use user data. We will update our policies to clarify how we intend to use your data for this purpose as well.

Many thanks for the clarification I sincerely hope you are right.

“Strava’s API in artificial intelligence models or similar applications.”

Similar applications is a bit vague though

Suffice to say Strava could have handled it better

To quote DC Rainmaker, why do these guys seem to wake up every morning and see how best they can piss their customer base off more?

I get the power grab, but if they can’t play nicely in the sandbox they will not remain the center of everyone’s data feeds.

Really happy to hear that Xert is unaffected, I hope it stays that way.

What makes this so annoying, is that without other companies providing Strava with data, they probably wouldn’t have grown as big as they are. I don’t know anyone who records via the Strava app, everyone uses another companies device and then shares that data to Strava.
