I imagine that this may impact a few people on here and quite possibly Xert itself.
That’s a very weird move from strava. Unless you are using their app to generate data, the data is still owned by the user who also has them in whatever recording device or service. When the user authorises xert to use their data, they are authorising to use them fully.
It is convenient to use strava as a centralised repository but I would just cut them out of the equation and stop paying them if the overstep the line. And I suspect anyone who uses other training platforms such as xert, trainer road, training peaks and whatever they like, they are probably invested enough to do the same.
I ain’t no expert in data sync etc…but what does this actually mean? Strava's Big Changes Aim To Kill Off Apps
That xert will not have the data from rides outside xert ones in the future?
Doesn’t seem good as I like the fact that in xert I get all my rides and their algorithms take it from there.
Hummmm….
Can Xert integrate with intervals.icu as an alternative? Or Training Peaks at the least? Both can replace Strava as a central repository sans social part. We can keep free Strava accounts just for that and disable all integrations.
FWIW I now import into Xert directly from Garmin and Zwift, which has me covered. It’s people who use devices that don’t (yet) directly sync with apps such as Xert, Intervals.icu, Veloviewer etc that will feel the brunt of this. Seems extremely heavy handed to me, an awful lot of people seem very angry about this and in the long term I think it will actually hurt Strava.
Luckily for Xert users, people can use the Xert EBC app if their device doesn’t sync directly with Xert to avoid issues caused by the decision from Strava to effectively turn off their API.
1.Other users ie coaches will not be able to view their clients data on Xert if it has arrived on Xert via Strava.
-
Xert will be unable to use any data that has come from Strava to use for data analysis by AI, machine learning or any other similar means.
-
Not only will this apply to data going forward but will also apply retrospectively.
Basically if all or most of your data has come from Strava to Xert or any other platform and the platform or you yourself don’t do something to mitigate this you will effectively loose all the analysis of your past and future data.
I, with a number of other people on other forums, have requested a zip file of all my files on Strava so I at least have a record of them outside of Strava.
Personally i’m going to find a way of making sure that all my file on Xert from and including my last breakthrough are on Xert by another means other than Strava ie Garmin or direct upload and I’m removing Strava uploads going forward (if I can) and using only Garmin. My only worry is that if I remove the link from Strava I’ll loose all my past Data uploaded that way. @xertedbrain @ManofSteele Could you comment on this p[lease although I realise you might have your hands full at the moment.
Please do this.
@xertedbrain @ManofSteele
Would it be possible to add a column in the Activities view that states the source of the activity so we could take some individual action to replace Strava sourced activities with a direct upload
Thanks
I’ve cancelled my Strava subscription.
I’ll see what happens
Same!
I have also canceled my Strava subscription
I never subscribed, I couldn’t justify paying for analysis that I already have here and garmin. Maybe thats the problem.
I just changed to exact this behaviour. I try to have a full history in garmin and xert, from now on.
What shall I do with historic data which was imported to xert via Strava? Is there any advantage, if I delete and reimport it via fit files?
The advantage would be, that as the data has been uploaded directly and not synced via Strava’s API it would fall outside of Strava’s control. So in other words that would free you up to let others see it (such as a coach). At the moment, as long as it is only yourself looking at that data, you should be fine to leave it as it is, the parts of Strava’s statement about not being able to use the data in AI applications is a little worrying, but I saw a post earlier from one of the Xert team stating that currently this doesn’t affect Xert. Hopefully, over the next few days there will be some clarification of what exactly is or isn’t going to be allowed and the steps we can all take to mitigate the changes.
Worst case scenario for me would be that I’d lose some data from the last three months, which I could easily get from Garmin Connect and just manually upload anyway. That way my signature and training loads would be maintained, bit of a faff if it came to that, but nothing too drastic. The main thing is changing the way you sync for the future to make sure you aren’t affected by this.
Rather than download each FIT file, you can request a bulk download from Strava of all your data, which would be easier than spending ages getting each file. They send you a link to download a ZIP file , which you can then extract all you files from. It’s worth doing every now and again to have a backup anyway. I can’t remember the exact way you get it, but I’m sure a quick Google will show you how. It might take a while to get the link, there’s a lot of people requesting it at the moment.
