I’m wondering if my change in TP last Sunday (Australia time 16/11) can be checked.
My TP rose from 227 to 263 after a 2 hour race.
During the race my Garmin seemed to recognize 4 BTs which, on my progression chart, seemed to have been recognised as 2 x Silver bts.
I have previously had a tp of 247 (October 2024) which has drifted down since then to 227 prior to the race.
Training Peaks seems to keep a track of me even though I haven’t had an account for some years…they sent me a “new threshold” message suggesting FTP = 245.
If you suspect the BT change is unwarranted you can always flag the activity to retain the strain score and skip signature calc.
OTOH the fact the Garmin recognized four potential BTs indicate a BT was likely.
Garmin app detection isn’t as accurate as server analysis.
When the activity is analyzed second by second on the XO server a final assessment is made and applied. Only the highest BT point appears on the adjusted chart but you can click the Previous button below the chart to see where any BTs occurred and how long or how much higher above MPA they were.
One way to judge whether your signature is in the right ballpark is to ride an over/under TP workout like Until the End and see how that feels.
Or an over-under LTP workout like Lucy in the Sky which should feel conversational pace during the < LTP blues and rising above that during the aqua intervals.

Thanks.
TrainingPeaks uses a very simple method to determine FTP changes and will generally under report a change compared to Xert since TP doesn’t account for fatigue the way Xert does.
Seeing a big jump could mean that your power meter calibration/accuracy may be off or that you legitimately have had a big improvement. Congrats! Maybe?
Thanks for the input.
Looks like I did have a BT. Checked the progression chart and notice the following:
- 4/4/2024 258TP
- 3/9/2024 242TP
- 31/10/2024 249TP
- 16/2/2025 261TP
So not as dramatic a jump in TP as I first thought…I had been focused on more recent TPs during the months over xmas where TP had declined at on stage to around 227W.
Just one other more general question. What is the take away value of say TP,LTP, HIE and PP levels for guidance in say a 4-4.5 hour grand fondo?
Once again thanks.
Hi, Just one more, one more question. You say in your previous reply (see below) that FTP (Training Peaks) will under report a change in TP because Training Peaks doesn’t account for fatigue the way XERT does? Surely that means Xert would generally report a lower change?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding soemthing?
Regards,
That’s what XFAI does for you. Try Event or Race options.
Depends. You should see more frequent changes but it also means that if you’ve not been doing true maximal efforts, you may actually see a bigger jump since the previous near max efforts are picked up.
