Segment hunter - no segments loaded

I am doing local hillclimb, as well as a gravel timed segment each month this summer, and I saw XSH, so I thought I would give it a try.

I followed the instructions

and have the datafield on my Garmin Explore2 - and I have two segments in my Xert account selected to sync to Garmin. But when I start a ride the datafield shows “fetching segments” but than after quite a while, it shows “no segments loaded” and transitions to “prowling”

the phone that has Garmin Connect running on it is connected to the internet via Wifi

Any suggestions?

thanks -Peter

“prowling” means you are not near to the loaded segment. In order for segment to appear on your garmin device, you need riding near to the segment area.

thanks a lot for your reply.

Is there any way to know if the two segments actually sync’ed to my Garmin before I ride the 30 minutes to the start of the segment?

I looked in the Segments folder on my Garmin, and it is empty.

When you swipe to the Segment Hunter screen on your Garmin (after starting a recording) you should see the segments you selected to sync (up to 5) after a successful fetch.
If not, are you sure you entered your Xert username and password correctly under Segment Hunter Settings on Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express?

wow!’

Not sure how I missed the Settings button in ConnectIQ view of the XSH.

thanks for pointing that out. I guess I thought it would get my creds from XDB and/or XMB

XSH worked great on my test today.

I did have a question about the algorithm. I was doing an 11 mile climb. The overall climb averages 5%. The first 9 miles averages around 4.4% (which is all I did today) and the last 2 miles are more like 8-12%

Does XSH do any sub-segment analysis - or (as I expect) it considers the climb to have a constant grade of 5% for the whole 11 miles?

thanks

It doesn’t really know anything about the segment itself… it uses your current MPA & your fitness signature to display the highest average power you could sustain for the target completion time & adjusts on the fly as you go (so if you push well above the suggested power, the power target will drop a bit, and if you ease off a bit, the target power might increase a bit). It’s a pretty simple, but useful tool!

It typically works best for segments that are <20 min or so.

thanks Scott.

I was hoping for too much - like a XERT-ified version of BestBikeSplit! (https://www.bestbikesplit.com/)

Funny enough, I just used the segment hunter again today! I forgot how neat of a little data field it is… really helpful for pacing longer, steadier efforts, if that’s something that you struggle with.

Today I used it to help me pace a ~10 min segment (and of course ended with a Near Breakthrough & -1 W to threshold). Meh. I’ll get it back next week!
