Magic Buckets Fetch Error on Garmin Edge 1030 Plus

When I start my Garmin Edge 1030 Plus and go to my Indoor profile, where I have Magic Buckets loaded, every time I get a “Fetch Error - 1004” or a “Waiting for…” (can’t recall verbiage at this second, will update if I do!) and then I’m locked out of trying to resync MB for 300 seconds/5 minutes. This starts me off with a 5 minute delay each morning when my time is precious.

Sometimes the MB connects (green dot indicator) and then I get a workout loaded. Other times, it has the same error for a second round (read: another 5 minutes), then it works on the third time.

How can I fix this?

Hi Zachary,

Make sure you have Garmin Connect app open/active on your mobile device before you power up your Edge device. Assuming it’s connected to your 1030, you should get an almost instantaneous fetch. The data field will try again when your activity is started as well, so you can always pause & resume in the middle of a ride to re-fetch targets.

Also important to note that the data field will track your progress even if the targets haven’t been fetched yet. Since you’ll likely be riding easy/warming up the first couple of minutes, the exact targets won’t matter too much at that time, so you can at least get out the door & start training.

FWIW, I generally know what to expect from my training sessions by reviewing it from the web the day/night before (e.g. ~2hr endurance, or ~160 XSS of Mixed Rouleur HIIT) so I’m not completely blindsided by what I need to do each day.

HTH!

Thank you. I have Connect running on my phone but it may not be active. I will give that my focus and report back if the issue continues. I was thinking the issue is with my Edge being connected to WiFi and trying to pull the data or connect in some other way than through my phone. I’ll try having GC up first, then disabling WiFi and having the app up to see if that makes a difference if it’s not resolved just with the app being up.

Normally Garmin Connect runs in background on your phone unless that permission wasn’t approved during the install.
Another option is to tap the profile you intend to use 5 minutes before you’re ready to ride.
XMB doesn’t need to be displayed but 5 minutes later a second fetch attempt will have occurred (if required).
Once a fetch is successful there is no need for the GC connection although GC does feed other features on your Edge such as text alerts and Livetrack.

And if you have a Garmin Edge 540/840/1040/1050 you do not even have to wait 5 minutes

Why do you have to wait on a 1030 plus?

It is programmed that way. I believe it is a limitation of the older SDK versions which requires data fetches to be done as a background process. And those can only be ran every 5 minutes (this is true for all SDK versions).

On 1040 etc it will just fetch the data in the foreground, and no such limitations exists.
