How to do a workout?

Hey there. Trying to understand how to do a exert workout? i have a garmin edge 520 and a wahoo kick setup. i would rather use erg mode for most workouts. my phone is iOS so I’m looking at either the workout being on the teeny tiny screen of the edge 520 ( which i have no interest in doing) or the remote player i guess?!
Starting up the remote player i see no way of connecting anything, ie, garmin or trainer to it? help much appreciated.
