Garmin - avoid fat finger 'end workout' mistakes when restarting a paused workout

Hi, just been on a workout outdoors. Paused the workout at a set of lights, and then when restarting it I managed to press “end work out”, which is just below “restart workout”. I’ve three suggestions:

  1. Reorder the buttons on the screen so that “end workout” / “delete workout” aren’t next to resume work out
  2. Create more space between the buttons to avoid fat finger mistakes
  3. If someone clicks end or discard, then ask user to confirm before complying

Thanks

Real talk here

never pause a workout. Just let it rip.

If it’s too long a pause, treat it as 2 workouts.

Stop with pausing stuff 100% of the time.

Just let it roll. Why are you discarding data? What is gained? Just let it record. It’ll be ok!

Well you can either deny that an improvement could be made to the UX, or just pretend it doesn’t exist I guess…

It happened again today so its still poor UX and I’m still a disappointed user with a Strava account with many connections so perhaps it might get added as a minor change; in the meantime I’ll probably take your suggestion though.

Suggest you change title to Garmin Connect IQ Workout Player.
I think #3 would resolve issue.

Do you prefer the Workout Player with a structured workout versus Magic Buckets for an outdoor workout?
The latter is more fun and I would argue more effective since XMB dynamically adjusts in real-time. Plus, no reason to pause the recording.

Thanks for your response. Helpful (although I’m not sure how I edit the title to the original post).

To your questions (I ride entirely outdoors):

  • I’ve used both magic buckets and workout player. MB is great for my commute to stop me overdoing it so I expect I’ll keep on with that.
  • Workout Player is great outdoors. I have a specific place that I do the workouts on a flat piece of quiet road. To get there it takes 10-15 mins depending on traffic lights / level crossings so pausing and restarting a workout so as not to miss the post warm up sections is helpful (but consequently very annoying when the workout is accidentally ended early…)

There’s also a 4th solution, which is probably the best: press the physical start button (the same as the physical stop button that brings up the menu). That way there’s zero chance of pressing save / discard by accident.
