Re XSS Buckets Player. Would you be able to unpack this a but more for me:

Buckets are now available as a web widget. Open the web-based XSS Buckets window together while you’re recording on your Xert EBC Android or iOS app and watch your buckets fill alongside whatever you watch during workouts - Zwift, Rouvy, Netflix, Youtube, etc. While the web-based buckets isn’t a full-fledged Magic Buckets system, it’s an excellent visual for those that would like to view their training in real-time alongside other applications.

I use Wahoo head units and I use Apple TV to run Zwift. I have been properly intrigued by Magic Buckets since you brought it out but have never used it because I’m not on Garmin. So the XSS Buckets desktop player is tantalising, but to be honest I do’n’t have a clue on how it works. I understand some of the Buckets concept but this question is more about how do I use XSS Buckets Player when I’m doing a workout on Zwift. Maybe it’s your reference to watching Zwift above that has caused a confusion.

Can you please talk me through what I have to do to see real time changes on the XSS Buckets app. What do I need to link and pair etc? As I say, I run Zwift through Apple TV and watch it on a TV screen. When I do Xert workouts, I screen mirror my Mac to my Apple TV and again watch it on my TV screen.

Thanks

Hi @tedjeory ! Unfortunately, this won’t work directly with Zwift (or any other 3rd-party app) since Magic Buckets/XMB is currently something that runs through Xert apps (Garmin, Hammerhead, Android/iOS EBC).

The new XSS Buckets web widget shows your real-time Low/High/Peak progress and Challenge Level, but it needs to receive live power data from a Xert app in order to work.

Since you’re on Wahoo + Apple TV Zwift, here’s an “advanced hack” that might work for you:

  1. Run Zwift on Apple TV as normal
  • Let Zwift keep trainer control
  • Pair your trainer/power as usual
  1. Open the Xert EBC app on iPhone/iPad
  • Pair power only (NO trainer control… leave that to Zwift)
  • If your trainer supports multiple Bluetooth connections, this should work fine.
  1. Start either:
  • a free ride, or
  • a Xert workout in the EBC app (any workout will do, since you’re not actually “doing” the workout from the iOS app).
  1. Open the XSS Buckets web widget/player on your Mac/browser & position it near/around Zwift on your screen

Now, while you’re riding in Zwift, the EBC app receives your power data and feeds it to the Magic Buckets web widget in real time, so you can see Buckets filling, Challenge Level changing, etc.

In other words: Zwift controls the ride, Xert EBC “listens” and analyzes it live.

You could even just free ride in Zwift and follow the XMB guidance to fill your buckets - that has been one of my favourite ways to train indoors all winter long.

One caveat: Apple TV can be a bit limiting with Bluetooth connections, so depending on your trainer setup, you may need a trainer that supports multiple BLE connections (many newer ones do).

Hope this helps clear things up!

Thanks Scott. So in a couple of mini tests just now, I followed your instructions in three different scenarios and in none of them did the XSS Buckets desktop app change in real time while I was riding. At the end of each ride, after I had saved and then closed down the Buckets pop up and re-opened, the buckets filled up with the completed ride data. But not in real time.

  1. A free ride in Zwift: (Followed all instructions but noticed afterwards that HR was also paired to EBC app). I rode, saw no real time changes and then thought maybe I needed to start a manual ride (no GPS location) directly from the Xert EBC player as well.
  2. A free ride in Zwift (again HR was also paired in EBC), did a hard interval to reach the interval target showing in the Buckets pop-up and held it for more than five seconds.
  3. Same as 2, but HR was paired only to Zwift.

Not sure why I am not seeing the live changes as I ride. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the Buckets app itself??
