2 x Fred Whitton Rides

Hi folks, I’ve ridden the Fred Whitton Sportive route twice in the last few weeks and have an XSS discepancy. On May 11 I did the actual event with a ride time of over an hour less (so pushing harder) than the second time completed 23 Jun. However the XSS score is considerable higher on the more relaxed/social ride - 507 v 445. It seems that because I’m riding longer albeit at lower wattage I get more XSS. Does this look right?

Post the MPA charts of the two rides so we can take a look!

Generally, yeah! Note that Xert doesn’t use your average (or weighted) power to calculate XSS. All the calculations for XSS are done on a second by second basis.

Hi Scott,

I think you’ve answered the question for me as I was looking at time taken and power. A JPEG of each MPA chart is provided here.

You must have good gearing on your bike as you don’t appear to have gone into the red at any stage in either ride.

Hi,

Second ride was a social with a few stops. That was done on a Spesh Crux gravel bike with a 40T 1x chainring and 44T easiest gear. Loaded up with ‘stuff’ and riding on heavier gravel wheels and tyres. Quite handy on the Lake District passes with multiple 25% climbs and one (Hardknott Pass) at 30%. All done seated and comfortably /uncomfortable. The first ride was an event and done on a Spesh Tarmac with a 36T little ring and 32T easiest gear. Lighter, faster and more aero bike with super light wheels and tyres. I wouldn’t expect to go into the red on that route as it needs well paced as the 3,x big climbs come back to back after 90 miles. So no real power spikes🥴

Event was 61 XSS/hour while the social ride was 56 XSS and 1:40 longer with stops.
I expect a large crowd event would differ from a small group social ride on same course, but it looks like the Focus Power rating was close to the same (minus stops).

That’s an interesting analysis, thank you. I know the power meter on the event bike reads about 10-15w lower at endurance pace than that I used on the social , so that might be a factor. If I was to score RPE for each event and how I felt at the end it would be 8/10 for event and 6/10 for the social ride. Thanks for the analysis, much appreciated.
